Total War Warhammer 2 Temple Guard

18.08.2019

I struggle to see how temple guard fit in, especially if you are playing Kroq gar. Are the best infantry of the entiere world of Warhammer, they are saurus who. 2 saurus spears would have no trouble handling this while only. The Temple Guard are a revered and uncommon spawning of Saurus. They were created to protect the Slann Mage-Priests and the temple-cities in which the Lizardmen dwell. To their tasks, they dedicate every fibre of their beings, displaying a single-minded determination that will result in either the safeguarding of their charges or their own deaths.

So my friend and I have spent 2 days playing dozens of multiplayer games to fight roughly equivalent units against each other.

In any strategy game its vitally important to know what counters what, to that end we decided to test the units we both use most and then write it down so we could reference it.
Our methodology was having always run on, right clicking each others unit, leaving them in their standard formation they are deployed in and letting them engage.
Points differences sometimes greatly vary but we used our knowledge of the lore to chose the equivalent units.

I have also tested some Lord combinations as below.

Kroq-Gar vs All Lords
I'll quickly summarize by saying Kroq-Gar handily beat every named lord, the closest was Malekith obviously and in some non-intentionally testing during another battle Malekith lost to a standard High Elf Prince on a Star Dragon so I feel he'd probably give Kroq a strong run for his money.

First Lizardmen vs Dark Elves Winner is in Italics.

Saurus vs Dreadspears
The Saurus won handily with the leap charge attack doing a lot of initial damage.

Cold One Knights vs Cold One Spear-Riders
This was very close but Murderous Prowess ended up tipping the scale with both units down to its last dozen or so riders, the Lizardmen surprisingly broke and fled.

Temple Guard vs Black Guard
The Temple Guard took this easily, the initial leap charge doing a lot of the damage.

Lizardmen vs High Elves

Cold One Spear Riders vs Silver Helms
This was not much of a surprise with the Cold Ones demolishing the Silver Helms, though the Dragon Knights might have been more on par cost wise then Silver Helms but we tried to get them close.

Total War Warhammer 2 Lizardmen Units

Seaguard Vs Saurus
The Saurus took a small amount of health damage from the bows but we turned off skirmish and let them charge into melee but the Seaguard were destroyed.
We both felt the Seaguard could do a lot better with Skirmish mode, kiting them to reduce their numbers then entering melee but this was about straight up fights.

Temple Guard vs Phoenix Guard
This is where the first major surprise came, while we expected the Phoenix Guard to potentially either pull even with the Temple Guard or maybe even beat them, we did not expect the PG to absolutely destroy them, it wasnt even close.

Skaven VS Lizardmen

Temple Guard vs Plague Monk Censor Bearers
Another weird one, the Monks destroyed the Temple Guard with over half their unit remaining in the end.

Kroxigor vs Rat Ogres
Another upset, lore wise anyway, the Rat Ogres absolutely demolished the Kroxigors.

2x Clanrats with Sword and Shield vs Saurus with Spear and Shield
Another upset, while we are absolutely certain that one unit of clan rats would be demolished by Saurus, but we wanted to make it fair so we made it 2 units as that added up to the same price as the single unit of Saurus. We spread the Saurus out so that the Clanrats didnt flank them in anyway but even so they destroyed the Saurus handily.

High Elves vs Dark Elves

Cold One Knights vs Dragon Knights
This was the closest fight with the Dragon Knights charge being absolutely devastating taking about 25% of the Cold One Knights.

Frostheart Phoenix vs War Hydra
Though considerably more expensive and alot more health the Frostfire won this won with 50% of its health to spare.

Star Dragon vs Black Dragon
Another one sided afair with the Star Dragon taking home the gold.

Shades vs Seaguard
We ended up fighting a few scenarios with these two, melee only, shooting only, melee for 5 volleys then melee, the Shades came out on top every time.
Note: We only noticed the points discrepancy long after but I wanted to add the results anyway.

Blackguard vs Phoenix Guard
Absolute domination by the Phoenix Guard.

White Lions vs Witch Elves
White Lions took it but the Witch Elves got them to about 35%.

Spearmen vs Dreadspears
Spearmen beat the Dreadspears pretty decisevely leaving about half their number and health after combat.

The original conclusion that the Dreadspears won was erroneous and a fault in my note taking.

Tomorrow we'll add Skaven vs and Dark Elf Vs filling in the other combinations.
If you want us to test any particular combination or have tips for the methodology let us know and thanks for reading!
Note: Having a weird issue with the italics not working and leaving * all over the shop.
